Top Maintenance Tips For Your Power-Pole Shallow Water Anchor

There is never a better time than the present to prepare some routine maintenance on your boat and, more specifically, your Power-Pole shallow water anchor. Nothing is worse than the sick feeling of being on the water on a beautiful day, on your day off and having a mechanical issue, especially an issue that may have been avoidable. By following some of the top maintenance tips for your Power Pole, you can rest assured that your equipment will perform when you need it most on the water.

Here, we will look at some highly recommended maintenance tips for any Power-Pole ONE Pump, BLADE, Pro Series II, or Sportsman II hydraulic anchor.

Check For Any Visible Issues

No matter where you store your boat, walk around it before performing routine maintenance; this is an excellent opportunity to inspect your Power-Pole(s) and the vessel itself for any glaring issues.

Once you reach the back of the boat, visibly inspect your Power-Pole(s) for any damage, corrosion, scratches, damaged hoses or fittings, remove any debris or grass, etc., wedged within the anchor. Next, open the compartment that houses your pump(s) and fuse(s) and visibly check the in-line fuse for any corrosion.

It's incredible how many potential issues you can find and solve by simply stepping back and visually inspecting your equipment!

Check All Mounting Hardware

Let's step back to the outside of the boat and focus on how your Power-Pole(s) are mounted. Whether you're utilizing one of the various Power-Pole Mounts and Adapters, Wedge Kit, or have your anchor mounted directly to the transom, it's important to double-check this hardware for a secure fit.

Take a wrench and a socket set and check each bolt on the mounting location(s). From there, you can work up the Power-Pole to check anything from the Stern Bracket Assembly and lower-pivot bolts to the Knuckle Assembly.

If any bolts are loose, inspect the nut and the bolt to ensure the threads are not damaged or corroded. If so, the hardware may need replacing.

Inspect The Everflex Spike

As you visibly inspect and tighten any mounting hardware, it's a good idea to examine the Power-Pole Everflex Spike up and down for damage. Look for cracks, splinters, and other damage that may hinder its performance.

If minor scratching and wear are evident on a Power-Pole Pro Series II and Sportsman II anchors, this may be a good time to add a Power-Pole Spike Wrap to prolong the life of your Everflex Spike and give it a custom look. This wrap is not compatible with BLADE anchors.

Inspect Pump and Hydraulics

Let's return to the boat and open the compartment(s) containing the Power-Pole hydraulic pump. After we checked the Power-Pole anchor mounting, we should check the pump's mounting hardware. If a pump is not mounted correctly, it can cause issues with the hydraulic lines and fluid flow.

Inspect the surrounding area to ensure no hydraulic fluid leaks around the hose fittings or the reservoir. If you suspect some leakage, inspect and change any Hydraulic Hoses or any corresponding Hydraulic Tubing. Don't forget to inspect the Reservoir Tank for any punctures, cracks, or any signs of damage. You never know what the rough waters of the ocean, Great Lakes, or your local lake may do to a vessel.

If you've noticed that your Power-Pole audibly struggles with deployment and retraction, it may be time to check its Top-Loading Cylinder. Inspect the hydraulic line to ensure that fluid is appropriately reaching the cylinder.

Top off the reservoir with the proper amount of Green Marine ISO-32 Hydraulic Fluid. Don't lose that Reservoir Tank Cap during this process!
