NRS PFD Guide - Which Life Jacket Should You Buy?

NRS PFD Guide - Which Life Jacket Should You Buy?

The NRS brand has become synonymous with kayak anglers and recreational paddlers alike, providing proven, quality products to enjoy the great outdoors. Since 1972, NRS has pioneered rugged and reliable equipment that keeps users safe and productive on the water. Today, this testament echoes throughout their entire lineup of products, including the full line of PFDs for anglers, rafters, and paddlers. With so many options to choose from here at Fishing Online, we wanted to highlight some of our favorite NRS PFDs. Each PFD is categorized by where it is best suited (in our opinion) for on-the-water use, and we highlight their best features!

Fishing

Not all PFDs are created equally, meaning not every PFD is built for rigorous on-the-water use by anglers. YakAttack SideStage Rod Rack

YakAttack SideStage Rod Rack

Storing rods can take many forms on a kayak, and depending on your layout, vertical rod holders may not be best suited for your setup. The SideStage Rod Racks provide a unique and easy solution with easy integration to store up to three rods utilizing an exclusive YakAttack system called the ClickTrac Rail System. With the push of a button, you can adjust each rod holder along the ClickTrac Rail, allowing you to position the SideStage tight to the kayak or farther out. Along each rail are three FlipGrips with three features: Open, Closed, and Locked, each easily adjusted by flipping the retaining lever. The SideStage Rod Rack is available in three options:

Standard

The base model SideStage Rod Holder is pretty straightforward; this setup includes a pair of rod holders and easily installs along two GearTrac attachment points, such as MightMounts or factory-installed track systems. The standard is a quick and easy solution if you know exactly how and where you want your rod holder installed.

Pro with LockNLoad Mounting System

The SideStage Pro with LockNLoad Mounting System is the ultimate adaptation of the SideStage utilizing YakAttack's easy-to-use LockNLoad Mounting. Its full 360-degree adjustable base and the ability to adjust vertically make it an excellent option for orienting your rods out of the way best for your kayak fishing setup.

This system goes on the built-in track systems found on the gunwale of various boats such as Ranger Boats, Crestliner, G3, Lund, etc.

Do you need a replacement FlipGrip Mount or want to see if you can squeeze another on your existing SideStage? Don't worry; you can purchase individual YakAttack FlipGrip Spare Mount.

YakAttack CenterStage Rod Stager

YakAttack CenterStage Rod Stager

Not every kayak has forward rod staging in mind during production. As kayak fishing has evolved and anglers adapt to different fishing styles and techniques, keeping rods close by is essential to your production and success as an angler. The YakAttack CenterStage Rod Stager provides easy storage and integration to your kayak, holding up to four rods. The CenterStage is equipped with the LockNLoad base, making installation along your kayak simple and easy. Using the same ClickTrac Rail as the SideStage allows you to offset the CenterStage as you see fit, while the LockNLoad base lets you adjust the angle up and down. There has never been a more straightforward concept for forward rod staging than the YakAttack CenterStage.

YakAttack Leaderboard Fish Measuring Board

YakAttack Leaderboard Fish Measuring Board

There are many fish measuring boards on the market, but YakAttack looked to bridge the gap between quality, functionality, and convenience by introducing the YakAttack Leaderboard Fish Measuring Board. The Leaderboard isn't your standard board; it is designed with features to improve the angler's efficiency on the water.

With features such as built-in Culling Tabs, you can now keep track of your smallest and largest fish on the board, eliminating added time checking your phone whether you're in a tournament or out fun fishing.

The Leaderboard is durable and rugged, and it floats. With an EVA foam inlay underneath, the board is ready if it's knocked overboard. Its durable construction will handle the use and abuse of the hardcore angler and the many fish that will inevitably meet the LeaderBoard. The Oversized design and wide profile ensure you can measure a variety of fish easily by cradling them and holding them safely and securely while photographing your catch.

Unique to the LeaderBoard is the integrated ID holder that flips off the back of the board. Designed to fit standard ID cards of 3.75" x 2.25", this feature provides clear and precise identification of up to two ID cards. Also unique is the doubletake visual indicator; this mirrored surface eliminates the unknown of other measuring boards regarding whether or not a fish is up against the bump board by providing a clean mirrored surface. This indicator helps expedite the judging and scoring process during tournaments.

The YakAttack LeaderBoard is "Approved" for the Bassmaster Kayak Series, KBF, Kayak Adventure Series, and many more trails. Be sure to check out the complete approval list HERE.

Lastly, the LeaderBoard now features three new colors: Glacier Blue, Desert Sand, and Overcast, which correspond nicely with some of the more popular kayak colors and accents. If you're looking for the right mounting options, such as the LeaderBoard DoubleHeader or additional Identifier Sleeves, check out the YakAttack LeaderBoard Accessories.

Breaking Down The Bates Fishing Co. Casting Reels

Breaking Down The Bates Fishing Co. Casting Reels

You may have seen the name and the reels online or at your local tackle shop, but you're unfamiliar with the brand. Well, stick with us as we give you a breakdown of all the Bates Fishing Co. Reels and why you'll need to add one to your arsenal.

Bates Fishing Co. is a Texas-based company that is the product of Seaborn, a popular manufacturer of fly fishing and inshore fishing rods and reels. With the demand to provide the highest quality reels for bass anglers, Bates Fishing Co. has positioned itself nicely within the wide world of the fishing industry by providing high-quality casting reels. But these aren't just any molded reel off the assembly line; all Bates Fishing Co. Reels are fully CNC'd from 6061-T6 bar stock aluminum along a 9-axis machine. T6 aluminum alloy is the same quality grade aluminum used in automotive, aerospace, marine, industrial, and even firearm manufacturing. 6061-T6 Aluminum is utilized for its high strength-to-weight ratio, making it incredibly durable, corrosion-resistant, and extremely light.

With the precision machining process, no plastics or poured pieces are anywhere in the frame. Creating a baitcasting reel using 6061-T6 Aluminum provides anglers with a reel built to last and machined to the finest detail for a compact, lightweight, and virtually indestructible piece of equipment. All Bates Fishing Co. Reels feature an anodized anti-corrosion finish, providing unique and eye-catching reels from clear glossy coatings along the GOAT 150 to the matte black finish of the O.G. 100 and GOAT SWM 200. With a Bates Fishing Reel in hand, you will notice and feel the fine-tooth machining, intricate cuts, and attention to detail each reel experiences in production. It doesn't take long to feel the craftsmanship of a high-quality product like a Bates Fishing Co. Reel.

Let's check out the Bates Fishing Co. lineup and what you can expect from each reel.

Bates Fishing Co. The OG 100 Casting Reel

O.G. 100
The O.G. 100 is a throwback to baitcasting reels of old, with a round reel design that utilizes the latest cutting-edge performance. Many companies no longer make this design, which will appeal to those familiar with a rounded reel. This 100-sized reel is equipped with brass gears, ensuring precision and stopping power with 14 lbs of drag, making it a workhorse for your power-fishing techniques, from chatterbaits and spinnerbaits and even swimbaits in the 5" and 6" range. The O.G. is also double anodized, making it safe for fresh and saltwater. Available in left and right-handed retrieves in a 7.1:1 gear ratio.

Bates Fishing Co. The Hundo 100 Casting Reel

Hundo 100 Casting Reel
Maybe one of the most compact and versatile reels in the Bates lineup, the Hundo 100, is built for it all. Although listed as a 100-sized reel, in weight and comparison to similar reels, such as the Shimano Curado MGL 70 K, the Hundo is more compact and lighter in profile, weighing only 5oz. Utilizing a dual braking system along a shallow spool, the Hundo 100 excels in various techniques, especially when using a small diameter line. This compact, lightweight profile is extremely sensitive, ensuring you'll have complete transmission of what's at the end of your line to stay in tune with your presentation, whether fishing a finesse jig along a hard bottom or dragging a worm through the grass. Available in left and right-handed retrieves in 7.1:1 and 8.1:1 gear ratios. The Hundo 100 may just be the all-around reel you're looking for.

If that's not enough to convince you, Wired2Fish provides a great breakdown of the Hundo 100 - Bates Hundo Baitcaster Review.

Bates Fishing Co. The Hundo LTS 100 Casting Reel

Hundo LTS 100
Speaking of finesse, the Hundo LTS 100 (aka Light Tackle System) was crafted specifically for lightweight, finesse tackle and techniques. Fine-tuning the design of this reel ensures optimal casting for delicate presentations. It utilizes the same lightweight and compact frame as the Hundo 100, but the LTS features a shallower, skeletonized spool and fine-tuned internals optimal for finesse tackle. This shallower spool allows you to use light lines with precision and accuracy and at longer distances. The LTS also features an audible drag clicker, meaning you'll hear the drag click while under load fighting fish. Available in left and right-handed retrieves with a 7.1:1 gear ratio, the Hundo LTS 100 may also be one of the sleekest reels Bates offers, with its gunmetal grey and gold anodized finish.

Bates Fishing Co. The Salty Hundo 100 Casting Reel

Salty Hundo 100
Saltwater anglers couldn't be left out from using the popular Hundo 100-frame. The Salty Hundo 100 Casting Reel is perfect for inshore anglers as it is sealed and protected from the harsh saltwater environment. Each reel is reinforced with brass gears, stainless steel internals, and ceramic bearings to prevent corrosion from building inside the reel. The 150-sized frame is ideal for a wide range of fresh and saltwater techniques, allowing you to go from throwing a frog for largemouth to a swimbait for redfish with up to 16 lbs of drag. Available in left and right-handed retrieves in 7.1:1 and 8.1:1 gear ratios. If you're moving from inland to inshore, the Salty Hundo 100 is for you.

Bates Fishing Co. The GOAT 150 Casting Reel

GOAT 150
Every angler has that one reel they can rely on, no matter the technique or the body of water. The GOAT (Greatest Of All Time) 150 is a workhorse built to handle the abuse and keep going. The 150-sized reel opens up the full arsenal of baits and techniques, as it is equipped with a large spool, 120mm titanium handle, and 20 lbs of drag for complete control. An adjustable dual-braking system lets you fine-tune each presentation to achieve maximum casting distance and precision. What's New With The 2025 Hobie Pro Angler Kayaks?

What's New With The 2025 Hobie Pro Angler Kayaks?

Hobie Pro Angler Kayaks have always been the pinnacle of fishing kayaks, setting the standard for what anglers want and need on the water. Pro Anglers have transformed how anglers fish, offering two different pedal propulsion systems from the PA12 and PA14 with the MirageDrive 180 to the PA12 and PA14 with the revolutionary MirageDrive 360XR.

Over the years, the kayak fishing landscape has evolved drastically due to technological advancements, including electronics, anchoring, kayak motors, batteries, and rigging capabilities. Hobie has always dedicated its design work to accommodating the angler, and the Pro Angler Kayaks will continue to do just that. For 2025, Hobie has implemented necessary improvements and innovation into the Pro Angler lineup. Let's dive into the latest upgrades that all Pro Angler Kayaks received for 2025.

Hobie Mirage Pro Angler 14 360XR Pedal Fishing Kayak [Features]

Bow/Stern Inserts

More and more anglers are looking to enhance the performance of their kayaks, and this enhancement comes in many forms, whether it's a kayak motor, a Power-Pole Micro Anchor, or both. The 2025 Hobie Pro Angler Kayaks include molded inserts on both the bow and stern. These molded-in inserts provide quick and easy installation as they are pre-drilled to accept various mounts.

The molded inserts along the bow will accommodate a quick-release bracket for a bow-mounted trolling motor. When the motor is deployed, you will have full access to the front hatch, and while the motor is off the kayak, you will still have full access to the front bow handle for ease of use when transporting.

Looking at the stern, you will find a flat, reinforced surface that houses three sets of inserts, accommodating two Micro Anchors and one stern-mounted motor. This surface structure will not only securely house your Micro Anchors and motor but does so without disrupting the overall balance of the Pro Angler.

H-Plates

The Hobie H-Plates are specialized mounting plates designed to facilitate the installation of electronic devices from fish finders, motors, or anchors. Running wires and rigging your kayak has never been more accessible on the Pro Angler. There are five H-Plates located in the Pro Angler 12 and Pro Angler 14 360XR kayaks: (1) stern, (2) behind the seat, and (2) bow. The Pro Angler 12 and Pro Angler 12 360XR include (3) H-Plates and (2) additional 3-way thru-hole plugs. The H-Plate design allows you to drill into the plate directly to accommodate the wire size of your device, providing easy access to run wires throughout the kayak. Additionally, H-Plates will be available to purchase separately to add or replace existing plates on your kayak.

Under-Seat Battery Storage

Understanding that everyone has their own rigging style and preferences, you will find an additional under-seat battery storage option in 2025 Pro Anglers. The flattened battery storage area utilizes grip pads and straps to house your battery securely. The under-seat storage option provides anglers with quick and easy access to their battery, making this an excellent choice for an accessory battery or for fast and easy hookup and installation when you're on the move.

Reinforced 8-inch Rear Hatch

With the addition of electronics, motors, anchors, etc., Hobie wants to ensure the overall structure and balance of the kayak are not affected. By reinforcing the rear tank well of the kayak, more specifically, the 8-inch rear hatch ensures durability and dry storage in the rear of the kayak. Whether the tank well houses a livewell, fishing crate or houses your batteries, rest assured that this area of the kayak is reinforced for maximum usage.

Improved Rod Holder

While continuing with structural improvements, the forward rod holders were re-tooled during manufacturing. This process has now structurally reinforced the rod holders and the overall kayak, allowing for the additional weight experienced when adding bow or stern motors and anchors. This improvement adds balance when adding accessories and improves your ability to stand, fish, and move freely throughout the kayak.

Hobie Powerwall

For Forward-Facing sonar enthusiasts, all Pro Anglers will include the Hobie Powerwall. The Powerwall is a mounting plate that clips onto the kayak's mast base in the front hatch. This plate is specifically designed to accommodate your Forward-Facing Sonar module or a distribution hub for your electronics. With Forward-Facing Sonar becoming a staple in many anglers' arsenals, the Hobie Powerwall provides easy rigging and ensures your FFS module is safe and secure to avoid any hazards.

Colors

In 2025, Hobie added two new colorways to accompany the popular Pro Angler lineup. For the Pro Angler 180 kayaks, you'll see Glacier Camo, a combination of Glacier Blue, Dune, and Black. For the Pro Angler 360XR lineup, you'll see OG Camo, a combination of Olive Dune and hints of Black. These colors combine some of the most popular Hobie colors and will catch your eye on the water or in-store!

Reviewing FishOn Tungsten - Is It Worth It?

Reviewing FishOn Tungsten - Is It Worth It?

When you're shopping around for tungsten weights, you'll come to find a ton of options. None, however, will offer the value of FishOn Tungsten.

FishOn Tungsten is lead-free, constructed of 97% tungsten, features a non-chip coating, and is available at a killer price! Hands down, these are the most affordable tungsten weights on the market!

For some time now, tungsten has become a staple in virtually every angler's terminal tackle box. For many techniques and scenarios, tungsten outperforms its traditional lead counterpart. Let's check out some of the features that make FishOn Tungsten great.

Dave Lefebre talks about FishOn Tungsten - Fishing Online Product Spotlight.

Construction

FishOn Tungsten weights are constructed of 97% tungsten, offering an eco-friendly design. Tungsten is compact, sensitive, and more durable than lead because tungsten is roughly 40% denser. Being a denser material allows tungsten to endure more abuse and allows these weights to come in a more compact profile while maintaining weight; this now provides anglers with a more compact bait profile when rigging a Texas Rig, a dropshot, or when adding nail weights to a finesse worm.

Durability

When you purchase tungsten, you expect it to last and perform. FishOn Tungsten weights are constructed with the highest standard to ensure the quality of each weight enhances your fishing ability and does not hinder your performance due to faulty manufacturing and defects in the tungsten.

All FishOn Tungsten Flipping, Punch, and Worm weights are insert-free and come in black or green pumpkin. The black is an oxidized coating baked into the tungsten during production. This process ensures that this weight will not chip. Whether you're banging a weight off a dock on an errant cast or dragging around jagged rocks, the black oxidized coating will not waver.

Sensitivity

Tungsten is also a much more responsive material, meaning that what it comes into contact with translates through your rod, allowing you to pick up on bottom composition and detect bites more easily. So when dragging a Tungsten Cylinder Drop Shot Weight along a hard bottom or flipping a Tungsten Flipping Weight on a Texas Rig through vegetation, you will detect any subtle change in composition.

The dense construction also allows tech-savvy anglers to detect their bait easily with their electronics. Unlike lead, tungsten registers a brighter return through traditional and forward-facing sonar.

The enhanced sensitivity of FishOn Tungsten ensures you stay in contact with your bait, whether you're grasping a better feel along the bottom or visually seeing your presentation through your electronics.

Price Point

One main reason anglers will resist purchasing tungsten is the price point. For many years, this was true as tungsten yielded a much higher price point than traditional lead. However, you will find that FishOn Tungsten offers the best prices for your favorite tungsten, Flipping, Punching, Worm, Drop Shot, and Nail weights. And the proof is in the pudding when you start comparing prices.

Conclusion

When it comes to purchasing and using tungsten, you won't find a better value than the options offered by FishOn Tungsten, from the durable, sensitive construction and various weights and sizes to the unbeatable price point. If you were weary of switching over to tungsten, take this breakdown as a vote of confidence that you not only receive a quality product but won't break the bank in return.
